Infliximab (Remicade, Inflectra, Renflexis, Ixifi)
Immunotherapy · Approved since 1998
Description
Infliximab is a chimeric monoclonal antibody that targets tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF- ) and is primarily used in colorectal cancer patients to manage inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) complications, particularly Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis that may be associated with or predispose to colorectal malignancies. In the CRC setting, infliximab serves as supportive care to control severe inflammatory conditions that can complicate cancer treatment or occur as treatment-related toxicities. The drug is also used to manage immune-related adverse events in cancer patients receiving certain immunotherapies.
Mechanism of Action
Infliximab binds with high affinity to both soluble and transmembrane forms of TNF- , neutralizing the biological activity of this pro-inflammatory cytokine. By blocking TNF-? signaling, the drug reduces inflammation, decreases immune cell activation, and suppresses the inflammatory cascade that contributes to tissue damage in inflammatory bowel conditions.
