Alpelisib (** Piqray (brand name), alpelisib (generic name) **)
Other Medications
Description
Alpelisib is a medication currently being studied in clinical trials for certain types of colorectal cancer (CRC). It is specifically being investigated for patients whose tumors have a PIK3CA mutation. PIK3CA mutations are changes in a gene that can affect how cancer cells grow and divide. Alpelisib is being tested in combination with capecitabine, a type of chemotherapy, to see if it can help slow down the growth or spread of the cancer. The goal of the trials is to find the best dose of alpelisib and to see how effective this combination is in patients with PIK3CA-mutated CRC. It is not yet approved for use in CRC.
Mechanism of Action
Alpelisib is designed to target a specific protein involved in cell signaling pathways that control cell growth, survival, and division. In some cancers, including those with PIK3CA mutations, this pathway is overactive, contributing to uncontrolled cell growth. Alpelisib works by inhibiting this protein, potentially slowing down or stopping the growth of cancer cells that rely on this pathway. The specific protein targeted by alpelisib is part of the PI3K pathway.
