Description

Tricom-cea is an investigational vaccine therapy being studied in clinical trials for certain types of advanced or metastatic cancers, including colorectal cancer, that express the CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen) protein. It is designed to stimulate the patient's own immune system to target and attack cancer cells. The therapy involves harvesting a patient's own dendritic cells (a type of immune cell), modifying them in a lab to include CEA, and then re-infusing them back into the patient. This process aims to teach the immune system to recognize and fight cancer cells that have CEA on their surface. It is currently in early-phase trials to determine its safety, how well it can be tolerated, and if it can trigger an immune response against cancer. It is not yet an approved treatment for colorectal cancer.

Mechanism of Action

Tricom-cea is a type of cancer vaccine. It works by using a patient's own dendritic cells. These cells are modified in the lab to display CEA (a protein often found on colorectal cancer cells). When these modified cells are given back to the patient, they act like teachers, showing the immune system what CEA looks like. This helps the immune system, specifically T-cells, learn to recognize and attack cancer cells that have CEA on their surface. The vaccine uses a fowlpox virus vector to deliver the CEA information to the dendritic cells.

Side Effects
