Description

SGN1 is an experimental treatment being studied for advanced solid tumors, including colorectal cancer. It's a genetically modified bacterium (a type of Salmonella) designed to target cancer cells. The idea is that many cancer cells need a specific amino acid called methionine to grow. SGN1 contains an enzyme called L-Methioninase, which breaks down methionine. By delivering this enzyme directly to the tumor, SGN1 aims to starve the cancer cells of methionine, potentially slowing or stopping their growth. This treatment is currently in early-phase clinical trials (Phase 1) to determine its safety and find the right dose. It is not yet an approved treatment for colorectal cancer.

Mechanism of Action

SGN1 is a modified bacterium that acts as an oncolytic agent. It is designed to preferentially target and replicate within tumors. Once inside the tumor, the bacterium releases the enzyme L-Methioninase. This enzyme breaks down the essential amino acid methionine, which many tumor cells rely on for growth. By depleting methionine within the tumor microenvironment, SGN1 aims to inhibit tumor cell proliferation and potentially cause tumor cell death. The specific mechanism involves exploiting the methionine dependency of certain cancer cells.
