Description
Sargramostim is a recombinant granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) that functions as a hematopoietic growth factor and immune system modulator. In colorectal cancer treatment, sargramostim serves dual roles as supportive care to enhance white blood cell recovery following chemotherapy and as an immunotherapy adjuvant to boost anti-tumor immune responses. It is commonly used to reduce the risk of infection in patients receiving myelosuppressive chemotherapy regimens and has been incorporated into vaccine-based immunotherapy protocols for advanced colorectal cancer.
Mechanism of Action
Sargramostim binds to GM-CSF receptors on hematopoietic progenitor cells and mature immune cells, stimulating the proliferation, differentiation, and activation of granulocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. This mechanism enhances both innate and adaptive immune responses while promoting bone marrow recovery from chemotherapy-induced myelosuppression. The drug also enhances antigen presentation by dendritic cells, making it valuable as an adjuvant in cancer vaccine strategies.
