Factor Xa

Description

Rivaroxaban is a direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) from the factor Xa inhibitor class used for thromboembolism prevention and treatment in colorectal cancer patients. Cancer patients have significantly elevated risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), and rivaroxaban provides anticoagulation therapy for both prophylaxis and treatment of blood clots in this population. In colorectal cancer, it is particularly relevant for extended prophylaxis following surgical resection and for managing cancer-associated thrombosis.

Mechanism of Action

Rivaroxaban directly and selectively inhibits factor Xa, a key enzyme in the coagulation cascade responsible for converting prothrombin to thrombin. By blocking factor Xa, rivaroxaban prevents thrombin generation and fibrin clot formation, thereby reducing the risk of thrombotic events commonly associated with malignancy and surgical procedures.
