Estrogen receptors androgen receptors

Description

Prasterone is a synthetic form of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a naturally occurring steroid hormone precursor. In the context of colorectal cancer treatment, prasterone is used as supportive care to address vaginal atrophy and sexual dysfunction that occurs following pelvic radiation therapy in women treated for rectal or anal cancers. This medication helps restore vaginal tissue health and function by providing local hormonal support to counteract radiation-induced tissue damage.

Mechanism of Action

Prasterone acts as a precursor to both estrogen and testosterone, converting to these active hormones within target tissues through local enzymatic processes. When applied vaginally, it stimulates vaginal epithelial cell proliferation and increases vaginal lubrication by restoring local hormone levels without significant systemic absorption.
