Description
Pico-Salax is an osmotic laxative bowel preparation used to cleanse the colon prior to colonoscopy and colorectal surgical procedures. It contains sodium picosulfate, magnesium citrate, and citric acid that work together to produce complete bowel evacuation.
Mechanism of Action
Sodium picosulfate is converted by colonic bacteria into an active compound that stimulates colonic motility, while magnesium citrate acts osmotically to retain water in the intestinal lumen and stimulate bowel movements.
