Description
Panvac-f is an investigational vaccine being studied for certain types of advanced cancer, including colorectal cancer. It is designed to stimulate the body's immune system to target cancer cells. The vaccine contains genetic material (transgenes) for two proteins often found on the surface of cancer cells, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and mucin-1 (MUC-1). These proteins have been modified to potentially enhance the immune response. The vaccine also includes genes for molecules that help activate immune cells (T-cell costimulatory molecules). Panvac-f is given in combination with another vaccine, Panvac-v, and a medication called sargramostim. Clinical trials are primarily focused on evaluating the safety and potential effectiveness of this vaccine combination in patients whose cancer expresses CEA or MUC-1. It is important to note that Panvac-f is not yet approved for use and is only available in clinical trial settings.
Mechanism of Action
Panvac-f is a type of cancer vaccine. It uses pox viral vectors (fowlpox) to deliver genetic material encoding CEA and MUC-1 antigens, along with T-cell costimulatory molecules, into the body. The goal is to trigger an immune response, specifically activating T-cells, to recognize and attack cancer cells that express these antigens. The modified CEA and MUC-1 antigens (agonist epitopes) are designed to elicit a stronger immune response than the native forms. The T-cell costimulatory molecules further enhance the activation of immune cells. The vaccine is typically given in a prime-boost regimen (often with Panvac-v) to maximize the immune response.
