Ondansetron (Zofran, Zuplenz)
Other Medications · Approved since 1991
Description
Ondansetron is a selective 5-HT3 receptor antagonist antiemetic medication used as supportive care in colorectal cancer treatment. It serves as a critical component of antiemetic regimens to prevent chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) in patients receiving emetogenic chemotherapy protocols. Ondansetron is also utilized to manage radiation-induced nausea and vomiting in CRC patients receiving abdominal radiation therapy, and shows promise in treating Low Anterior Resection Syndrome (LARS) following colorectal surgery.
Mechanism of Action
Ondansetron selectively blocks 5-HT3 receptors located in the chemoreceptor trigger zone of the medulla and on vagal nerve terminals in the gastrointestinal tract. By antagonizing these serotonin receptors, it prevents the cascade of signals that trigger nausea and vomiting responses to chemotherapy agents and radiation therapy.
