Description
Mitomycin-PIPAC refers to the delivery of mitomycin C chemotherapy via pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy (PIPAC) for treatment of peritoneal carcinomatosis from colorectal cancer. This approach delivers mitomycin C directly into the peritoneal cavity as an aerosolized mist under pressure, allowing enhanced penetration into peritoneal tumor deposits. The technique is used for patients with peritoneal metastases who may not be candidates for cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy.
Mechanism of Action
Mitomycin C functions as an alkylating agent that crosslinks DNA strands, preventing DNA replication and leading to cancer cell death. The PIPAC delivery method creates increased intraperitoneal pressure that enhances drug penetration into peritoneal tumor tissue compared to standard liquid instillation.
