Lubiprostone (Amitiza)
Other Medications · Approved since 2006
Description
Lubiprostone is a chloride channel activator approved by the FDA for treating chronic constipation and constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome. In colorectal cancer care, lubiprostone serves as supportive therapy to manage treatment-related constipation and may be used as part of bowel preparation protocols for colonoscopy procedures. Recent clinical research has explored its potential role in combination with maintenance therapy for preventing postoperative recurrence in patients with peritoneal metastatic coloreceal cancer.
Mechanism of Action
Lubiprostone activates ClC-2 chloride channels in the gastrointestinal tract, leading to increased fluid secretion into the intestinal lumen. This mechanism promotes intestinal motility and alleviates constipation by increasing the water content of stool and facilitating easier passage through the colon.
