Description
Indocyanine green is a tricarbocyanine dye that serves as a fluorescent imaging agent in colorectal cancer surgical procedures. It is used for real-time intraoperative visualization of tissue perfusion, lymphatic mapping, and identification of sentinel lymph nodes during colorectal cancer resections. The compound provides near-infrared fluorescence guidance to help surgeons identify critical structures, assess tissue viability, and locate metastatic disease including peritoneal carcinomatosis.
Mechanism of Action
Indocyanine green binds to plasma proteins and exhibits strong absorption in the near-infrared spectrum when excited by specific wavelengths of light. The dye accumulates in lymphatic vessels and nodes through lymphatic drainage pathways, allowing surgeons to visualize lymphatic flow patterns and identify sentinel nodes that may harbor metastatic disease.
