Description
I-hua33 (also known as 131I-huA33) is an experimental treatment being studied for advanced colorectal cancer. It combines a humanized antibody (huA33) that targets a specific protein (A33 antigen) found on the surface of some colorectal cancer cells with radioactive iodine (131I). The antibody acts like a guided missile, carrying the radiation directly to the cancer cells to kill them. This treatment is being tested in combination with capecitabine, a standard chemotherapy drug used for colorectal cancer. The goal of the clinical trial is to see if this combination is safe and effective for patients with advanced colorectal cancer who have not previously received capecitabine chemotherapy. The trial is in Phase 1, meaning it primarily focuses on determining the safe dosage and identifying potential side effects.
Mechanism of Action
I-hua33 is a targeted therapy. It uses a humanized antibody (huA33) designed to bind specifically to the A33 antigen, which is present on some colorectal cancer cells. Radioactive iodine (131I) is attached to this antibody. Once administered, the antibody seeks out and binds to the A33 antigen on cancer cells. The attached radioactive iodine then delivers radiation directly to these cancer cells, aiming to destroy them while potentially minimizing damage to healthy tissues. It is being studied in combination with capecitabine, a chemotherapy drug that interferes with DNA synthesis in rapidly dividing cancer cells.
