Description

Gastrografin is an iodinated contrast agent containing diatrizoate meglumine and diatrizoate sodium, classified as an ionic, high-osmolar contrast medium. In colorectal cancer care, it serves as a bowel preparation agent to enhance visualization during colon capsule endoscopy procedures. This radiopaque solution helps clear bowel contents and provides contrast enhancement for improved imaging quality during diagnostic procedures used in CRC screening and surveillance.

Mechanism of Action

Gastrografin works through its high osmolarity (approximately 1900 mOsm/kg), which draws fluid into the bowel lumen through osmotic effects, promoting bowel evacuation and cleansing. The iodinated compounds provide radiopaque contrast properties that enhance visualization of bowel structures and improve image quality during capsule endoscopy procedures.
