Description
Ferumoxytol is an ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticle that serves as both an iron replacement therapy and MRI contrast agent. In colorectal cancer, it is primarily used as an imaging enhancement tool to improve magnetic resonance imaging visualization of lymph nodes and tumor vasculature. The agent provides superior contrast enhancement compared to standard gadolinium-based agents, particularly for assessing lymph node involvement in locally advanced rectal cancer.
Mechanism of Action
Ferumoxytol nanoparticles are taken up by macrophages in the reticuloendothelial system, creating distinctive signal changes on T2-weighted MRI sequences. The iron oxide core causes local magnetic field disturbances that enhance contrast between normal and abnormal tissues, allowing for better delineation of lymph node architecture and tumor boundaries.
