Dronabinol (Marinol, Syndros)

Other Medications

Description

Dronabinol is a synthetic form of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive component of cannabis, used as supportive care in colorectal cancer patients. It is primarily prescribed to manage chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, as well as to stimulate appetite in cancer patients experiencing significant weight loss.

Mechanism of Action

Dronabinol works by binding to cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) in the central nervous system and peripheral tissues, which helps suppress nausea and vomiting reflexes while stimulating appetite centers in the brain.
