Dexmedetomidine (Precedex, Dexdor)
Other Medications · Approved since 1999
Description
Dexmedetomidine is a highly selective alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist used as a sedative and analgesic adjunct during colorectal cancer surgery. In CRC treatment, it serves as perioperative supportive care to provide sedation, reduce anesthetic requirements, and potentially improve postoperative pain control during laparoscopic colectomy and other colorectal surgical procedures. The medication is particularly valued for its ability to provide conscious sedation without significant respiratory depression.
Mechanism of Action
Dexmedetomidine acts as a selective agonist of alpha-2 adrenergic receptors in the central nervous system, particularly in the locus coeruleus. This action results in decreased sympathetic nervous system activity, producing sedation, anxiolysis, and analgesia while maintaining respiratory function. The drug's analgesic properties may also contribute to reduced opioid requirements during and after colorectal surgery.
