Citrafleet (** Citrafleet (generic formulation also available as sodium picosulfate/magnesium oxide/citric acid) **)

Other Medications

Description

Citrafleet is used as a bowel preparation for colonoscopy in colorectal cancer screening and diagnosis, not as a treatment. It ensures the bowel is clean prior to examination by inducing complete evacuation of the contents. Its use is crucial for accurate visualization during endoscopic procedures but has no therapeutic role in CCR.

Mechanism of Action

Citrafleet acts by inducing bowel evacuation through a combination of osmotic and secretory mechanisms, with sodium picosulfate stimulating colonic motility; magnesium oxide providing an osmotic effect to retain water in the bowel lumen; citric acid enhancing the absorption and efficacy of the other components.

Side Effects

Nausea; vomiting; abdominal pain; diarrhea; allergic reactions; electrolyte imbalance due to magnesium content

Not all side effects are listed. Side effects vary by individual. Always consult your oncologist.
