Description
BMX-001 is a selective superoxide dismutase mimetic compound designed to function as a radioprotector during radiation therapy for colorectal and other gastrointestinal cancers. The drug works by protecting normal tissues from radiation-induced damage while preserving the therapeutic effects of radiation on tumor cells. Based on clinical trial data, BMX-001 is being evaluated in combination with both short and long course radiation therapy regimens for anal cancer and potentially other colorectal malignancies.
Mechanism of Action
BMX-001 functions as a synthetic catalyst that mimics the activity of superoxide dismutase, an antioxidant enzyme that neutralizes harmful reactive oxygen species. The compound selectively protects normal tissues by reducing oxidative damage from radiation therapy while maintaining the cytotoxic effects on cancer cells, potentially due to differential uptake or metabolic processing between normal and malignant tissues.
