Description

Artesunate is an antimalarial drug derived from artemisinin that is being evaluated for repurposing in colorectal cancer treatment. This semi-synthetic artemisinin derivative has shown potential anticancer properties and is currently used as pre-operative therapy in stage II/III colorectal cancer. The drug represents a novel approach to cancer treatment by repurposing an established antimalarial agent for oncological applications.

Mechanism of Action

Artesunate generates reactive oxygen species and causes DNA damage in cancer cells through its interaction with cellular iron. The drug's endoperoxide bridge reacts with heme iron to produce free radicals that induce oxidative stress and apoptosis in malignant cells. This mechanism differs from traditional chemotherapy agents and may offer complementary therapeutic benefits in colorectal cancer treatment.
