Description

APX005M is an experimental drug being studied in a clinical trial for rectal cancer. It is being investigated as part of a combination treatment approach. The trial, called INNATE, is testing APX005M alongside standard treatments like short-course radiotherapy and mFOLFOX chemotherapy (a combination of 5-Fluorouracil, Leucovorin, and Oxaliplatin) before surgery. The goal is to see if adding APX005M to this standard treatment improves outcomes for patients with rectal cancer. APX005M is given as an infusion during the radiotherapy course, with a break, and then continued alongside most of the chemotherapy cycles. The trial is designed to assess the safety and potential effectiveness of this combination.

Mechanism of Action

APX005M is an anti-CD40 agonist antibody. This means it targets the CD40 protein, which is found on certain immune cells and some cancer cells. By activating CD40, APX005M aims to stimulate the body's immune system to recognize and attack the cancer cells. The specific mechanism by which APX005M interacts with CD40 and its effects on the immune response and tumor cells are being further investigated in clinical trials.

Side Effects

As APX005M is an experimental drug in early-phase clinical trials Its full range of side effects is still being evaluated. The NCT04130854 trial includes continuous safety assessment. Patients receiving APX005M in this trial will also be receiving standard treatments like radiotherapy and chemotherapy (mFOLFOX) Which have their own known side effects (e.g. Nausea Fatigue Low blood counts Mucositis Neuropathy for FOLFOX; skin reactions Diarrhea for radiotherapy). The trial monitors for any adverse events related to APX005M or the combination therapy.

Not all side effects are listed. Side effects vary by individual. Always consult your oncologist.
