About Loperamide

Loperamide is an opioid receptor agonist antidiarrheal medication used as supportive care in colorectal cancer patients to manage treatment-related diarrhea. It is commonly prescribed to control diarrhea caused by chemotherapy, targeted therapies, or immunotherapy-induced colitis. Loperamide helps maintain patient quality of life and allows continuation of cancer treatment by effectively managing gastrointestinal side effects.

Category Other Medications
Brand Name Imodium, Imodium A-D, Kaopectate II
Mechanism Loperamide binds to mu-opioid receptors in the intestinal wall, slowing intestinal motility and increasing water and electrolyte absorption from the bowel. This mechanism reduces stool frequency and improves stool consistency without significant central nervous system effects due to poor blood-brain barrier penetration.
