LIVERPEARLS-Irinotecan (LIVERPEARLS (microsphere delivery system))
Chemotherapy
Description
LIVERPEARLS-Irinotecan is a specialized drug-eluting embolic microsphere system that delivers irinotecan directly to liver metastases through chemoembolization procedures. This formulation combines the cytotoxic chemotherapy agent irinotecan with embolic microspheres designed for targeted hepatic arterial delivery in colorectal cancer patients with liver-predominant metastatic disease. The system allows for sustained local drug release while simultaneously blocking blood supply to tumor tissue in the liver.
Mechanism of Action
Irinotecan is a topoisomerase I inhibitor that prevents DNA replication and transcription by stabilizing the topoisomerase I-DNA complex, leading to DNA strand breaks and cell death. When delivered via the LIVERPEARLS microsphere system, the drug is released locally within the hepatic arterial circulation, providing high concentrations of irinotecan directly to liver metastases while minimizing systemic exposure.
