Description

Curcumin is a natural polyphenolic compound derived from turmeric (Curcuma longa) that has shown potential chemopreventive properties in colorectal cancer. In CRC applications, curcumin is primarily evaluated for its ability to reduce precancerous lesions such as aberrant crypt foci and adenomatous polyps. The compound has been studied specifically in patients with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), a hereditary condition that predisposes individuals to colorectal cancer development.

Mechanism of Action

Curcumin exerts its effects through multiple molecular pathways, including inhibition of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF- B), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and various inflammatory cytokines. The compound also modulates cell cycle progression, promotes apoptosis in abnormal cells, and exhibits antioxidant properties that may help prevent DNA damage in colonic epithelium.
